Develop the skills and knowledge to skipper coastal passages with ease!
This practical training course is designed for experienced sailors who want to tackle more challenging passages, teaching skills that will enable you to skipper a cruising yacht safely on coastal passages by day and by night and to be able to make calm, sound decisions when things go wrong.
We will help you to achieve this through an intensive five day passage, sailing close to land, by day and night and in poor visibility; dealing with complex situations such as boat handling at close quarters, navigation in shoal waters in and out of harbour - and the negotiation of busy shipping channels.
By the end of the course you should have the knowledge to become a Coastal Skipper. The course, like the Day Skipper, consists of skippered passages by each of the trainees in a whole variety of situations. It is a challenging but very rewarding week.
The location: You’ll be learning in the UK’s ultimate sailing destination, the Solent, home of the renowned Cowes Week, Round the Island and Fastnet regattas and fringed by the spectacular Jurassic Coast. Regular overnight anchorages include Gosport, Hythe, Lymington, Portsmouth and Poole on the mainland and Cowes and Yarmouth on the scenic Isle of Wight.
Ability after Course: Be able to skipper a 10-15m yacht in coastal waters by day or by night. On completion of this course you may be ready to sit for the RYA Coastal Skipper exam.
